You’ve already asked your besties to be your bridesmaids, but now you have a harder decision to make: What will they wear? These days almost anything goes--you can go the traditional route and have the dresses all match, but lately more brides are breaking the rules. What are your options?
Of course it’s traditional to have the bridal party all wear matching dresses. Maybe you have your heart set on the perfect Vera Wang that you found in one of the issues in your HUGE stack of bridal magazines. Matching bridesmaid dresses is a classic choice, I still see this a lot when I’m shooting weddings.
Another way to go is to choose the color of the dress and give your bridesmaids a few options of different styles. Or even give them free reign to choose their own dress as long as it’s in your chosen color. This is one way to really make your girls super happy--they probably all have different body types and know what style of dress is most flattering!
You could also totally buck tradition and let them wear whatever they want! This is probably better suited for a smaller, less formal affair, but if you go this route your bridesmaids will LOVE you! They’ll surely pick something they can wear again, which is every bridesmaid’s dream!
And I have two tips for you that your bridesmaids will totally appreciate: 1) Dresses with an A-line skirt or an empire waist are almost universally flattering. 2) Darker dresses, like navy, black, or hunter green are flattering on almost any skin type, and are more likely to be worn again for another formal event.
Take my advice and let your BFFs weigh in on the topic--you want them to be comfortable with what they’re wearing and feel good in their dress. After all, wearing the dress is just a small part of their bridesmaid duties--they’re also there for emotional support and of course to throw you an AMAZING bachelorette party! And chances are you’ll probably be called on to be a bridesmaid yourself in the future, so put yourself in their shoes!
